Why a garden?
It made me sad that there was no great directory of interesting contemporary electronic musical instruments out there. ModularGrid exists for modules, Vintage Synth Explorer exists for older gear / big name stuff, and you can visit perfect cricuit or similar and browse their inventory - but some of the most interesting gear isn't stocked at large synth sellers. I wanted something that focussed on contemporary instruments, small synth makers and gear for unsual music (noise, drone, ambient).
The layout / navigation of of the site is a work in progress, but please feel free to suggest ways you'd like to be able to browse the content (e.g. by tag, by company). The content of the site is open source, so please add your favourite piece of gear, or correct any mistakes you find.
I hope you find it useful!

On LLM (aka "AI") usage:
I am, for the most part, a certified "AI" hater. LLMs are being used to concentrate wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people, taking away jobs and eroding the quality of life of the rest of us, while drowning us in slop, all at great environmental cost.
That said, LLMs are powerful tools and can be used in mostly-ethical ways, if done thoughtfully. This is how they are being used for synthesizer.garden, starting in June 2026:
- I am only using locally run AI models. This avoids funding the big AI firms and their data centers. The LLM work for this site is being done on a 10 year old PC using an 8 year old consumer graphics card.
- AI is being used to make a human's work easier, not generate slop. It is automating the grunt work of collecting information, fetching the right images, and formatting images and info for display on the site.
- A human makes all the decisions. I pick what synths are added, and I read and edit, or write, every single word that makes it on to this site.
