The Melancholytron: No-Keybed Construct is a desktop synthesizer that comes packaged as a compact hardcover art book about melancholy. It features 5-note polyphony with approximately 300 carefully crafted melancholic sound textures, each built from individual samples per key (25+ samples per preset).

Eight real-time controls — Darkness, Context, Waiting, Linger, Clouding, Stress, Weight, and Focus — allow nuanced shaping of each sound. A single volume slider provides direct control over the output level. The instrument is MIDI-controlled via MIDI In and MIDI Thru (configurable as MIDI Out), with a mono jack audio output and 9–15V DC power input.

Each preset maps dedicated samples to each key, with samples lasting 3–16 seconds, creating a deeply expressive and contemplative playing experience.
